The root of progressive values is fighting for equality and fairness for all. This includes pushing back against bigotry and discrimination wherever it occurs. Antisemitism is the world's oldest form of hatred and is still persisting today. Hate crimes against the Jewish community have been on the rise for years and we must work to bring awareness to this horrific form of persecution. We can do this by supporting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. This definition embodies the lived experience of Jews and outlines modern manifestations of antisemitism.

The IHRA definition works to detail how antisemitism is used against the Jewish community and what it looks like today. Antisemitism no longer appears as Nazis corralling Jews into camps. It is much more nuanced today and this definition provides clear guidelines to allow governments and institutions to act accordingly to stop these acts of hate. So far, 28 countries and various institutions have adopted this definition to help ensure the safety of their Jewish communities. The IHRA definition is a huge step forward, and we must continue to push.

The IHRA definition was adopted by the United States under former President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have affirmed this decision by embracing the IHRA definition. They have also urged all countries that haven’t yet adopted this definition to do so. We need to come together as progressives and follow our leaders. The IHRA definition will help to protect Jewish communities from the rampant and ugly discrimination that they have had to face for decades. Now is the time. Help fight antisemitism!
