PETITION: Invoke the 25th Amendment

Donald Trump incited a violent riot inside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. After months of undermining the integrity of our democratic elections, the President of the United States called on his followers to march to the U.S. Capitol and demand Congress overturn the results of the presidential election. 

Hours later, thousands of right-wing extremists stormed the U.S. Capitol. Lawmakers were rushed to safety as the crowds gained entry to the building by bypassing security barricades and breaking windows. 

In 2019, Trump became just the third president in American history to be impeached by the House of Representatives. The charges – abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – were later dropped by the Senate, which was under Republican control. It’s time that Trump is held accountable and removed from office.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, said Jan. 6, 2021, would go down alongside the attack on Pearl Harbor as a day that will "live in infamy." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell labeled the riots a "failed insurrection."

Lawmakers are now calling on Vice President Pence to invoke the amendment, taking away Donald Trump’s power as president. 

The relevant part of the 25th Amendment is Section 4, which says: “Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.” applies to President Trump’s dangerous incitement of far-right radicals.
